Places to visit in Malaga

A historical highlight is Alcazaba, a former Moorish fortress dating back to the 11th century. Initially it was used as a palace, then as a fortress, and today as an archaeological museum. From Alcazaba, a small road leads to Castillo de Gibralfaro, a castle from the 14th century. The views over Málaga are absolutely spectacular. The city's cathedral (Catedral de Málaga) is another landmark that deserves a closer look. Its construction took an incredible 250 years, which means you'll notice different architectural styles. Málaga is a medium-sized historical city on the Costa del Sol. It is home to more than 550,000 people who have earned the nickname boquerones (sardines). The port is an integral part of life in Málaga. Freight and cruise ships come and go, it is the economic lifeline of the city. Water also flows down from the Axarquía Hills. The Guadalmedina and Guadalhorce rivers wind their way through the city to the Mediterranean Sea.

Discover Malaga

There is nothing like dining out in the warm outdoors. And in Málaga it's an evening affair because most kitchens are open until after midnight. For a bite-sized appetite, tapas offer the perfect solution. And to enjoy an after-dinner drink, you can always pop into one of the bars on the Plaza de la Merced. We definitely recommend taking the time to see the traditional flamenco dance, which is still performed here every Thursday.
