Flying to Wroclaw

The cultural capital of Europe

Temperate continental climate

11 degrees

1 hour and 30 minutes

Eastern Europe often has the image of being drab, boring and bleak. But as Wroclaw proves, that claim is far from true. The streets are clean, the people are welcoming, and there is plenty to do. Wroclaw became the European Capital of Culture in 2016, perhaps in recognition of the city's rapid growth.

Places to visit in Wroclaw

Wroclaw was founded on an island in the Oder river Ostrów Tumski. The first wooden church was built on this spot way back in the 9th century. Today, it is the site of the imposing Cathedral of St John the Baptist. Those who climb the tower are rewarded with a spectacular view of the city. The Racławice Panorama also creates an impressive picture. This painting measures 15 x 20 metres and is completely round (360 degrees). The subject of the canvas is the Battle of Racławice, when Polish insurgents fought in vain against the Russians (1794). Because of its size and shape, the painting makes quite an impression – it's an experience in itself. That can also be said for the whole of Wrocław. A city that will quickly win your heart.

Discover Wroclaw

Wroclaw has undergone another metamorphosis in recent history. The city has shed its dreary communist mantle, growing and prospering in the decades since. Kings, emperors and presidents have visited Wroclaw on many occasions. They would stay in one of the stately patrician houses on the Rynek (Old Market Square), such as House with the Golden Sun, House with the Seven Electors or House under the Blue Sun. It meant that the Gothic Ratusz (town hall) was nearby for meeting and conferring with local leaders.
