Flying to Salzburg

The Sound of Music

Continental climate

6 degrees

1 hour and 25 minutes

Most people associate Salzburg with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or the classic film ‘The Sound of Music’. And rightly so, as the city is certainly as beautiful as on the big screen. But Salzburg is also the perfect ‘base camp’ for your unforgettable winter sports holiday in Austria. It's proximity to Austria's most beautiful ski areas, such as Zell am See, Saalbach Hinterglemm and Kitzbühel, make Salzburg a popular travel destination.

Places to visit in Salzburg

The entire inner city of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The countless baroque buildings exude a sense of nobility and class, as does the beautiful shopping area around Getreidegasse. Mozart's birthplace and residence are also located here. ‘Class’ would also aptly describe the cuisine in the restaurants. No European city has more Michelin star restaurants than Salzburg. But you can also enjoy a fantastic local meal on a smaller budget in one of the many Gaststätten. In short: Salzburg is a romantic destination with a nostalgic charm.

Discover Salzburg

Rustic medieval buildings, wrought-iron signposts and small market squares with fountains: Salzburg sometimes seems to have jumped right out of a fairy tale. Notable sights include Mirabel Castle, St Peter's Cemetery, the imposing Cathedral and the squares Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz and Kapittelplatz. Fan of the Sound of Music? You can book a tour that takes you past most of the filming locations. One experience not to be missed is the cable train to Festung Hohensalzburg, the best preserved medieval fortress in Central Europe. The view from the top of the Festungberg, at 560 metres, is truly breathtaking. All that beauty has a somewhat less pleasant background, as this is where the megalomaniac Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had ordered the construction of many churches, monasteries, parks and castles, was imprisoned for life. He fathered 15 children before he was deposed and imprisoned.
