Most people associate Salzburg with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or the film ‘The Sound of Music’. It is not a strange comparison, because the city is undoubtedly as beautiful as on the silver screen. But Salzburg is also the starting point for an unforgettable winter sports holiday in Austria. It is situated near the finest skiing areas of Austria, such as Zell am See, Saalbach Hinterglemm and Kitzbühel.

Breathtaking view

Rustic medieval buildings, wrought iron signposts and small market squares with fountains: Salzburg sometimes seems straight out of a fairy-tale. Striking attractions are Mirabel Palace, St. Peter’s Cemetery, the imposing Cathedral and the squares of Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz and Kapittelplatz. Enthusiasts can book a tour that visits the filming locations of ‘The Sound of Music’. An experience not to be missed is the cable train to Festung Hohensalzburg, the best preserved medieval fortress in Central Europe. The view atop the Festungsberg, at a height of 560 meters, is truly breathtaking. All that beauty has a somewhat less beautiful cause: it was the megalomanic archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau who commanded the construction of many churches, monasteries, parks and castles. He fathered fifteen children before he was deposed and imprisoned.

The city centre of Salzburg is included in its entirety on Unesco’s World Heritage List. The many baroque buildings create an atmosphere of class, which can also be felt in the beautiful shopping area around Getreidegasse. The birthplace and residence of Mozart is located here as well. The culinary offer also has ‘class’. No other European city has more restaurants that have won a Michelin star. Those with modest means can sample the local cuisine in one of the many Gaststätten. In short, Salzburg is a romantic and charismatic destination.
