Professions at the airport
When I grow up
Nanou would like to work at an airport. That's why she spent a day at Eindhoven Airport. And so she learned all kinds of things about working at the airport. Watch the video here. (Dutch only)
Some 1,500 people work at Eindhoven Airport, making it a major employer in Eindhoven and the region. We employ people at all kind of professions each with their own tasks. You probably know a number of professions such as stewardesses/stewards, security staff and shop clerks. But did you know that we also have a fire department at the airport and do you know what a marshaller does?
What does the fire brigade do at the airport?
Safety is of course top priority at the airport. That's why we have a fire brigade at the airport. The firefighting tasks are performed by our 'neighbors' at Eindhoven Air Base. The firefighters are on standby for everyone who uses the airport. They can be on site within two minutes if there is a fire or fire danger. They can also give first aid if needed and help if someone gets sick.
What is the job of a marshaller?
The marshaller guides the aircraft to its assigned parking spot on the apron. With two red luminous sticks, he signals to the pilot. A marshaller can then let the pilot know, for example, whether the plane should move a little more to the left or to the right. Or when the plane should come to a stop. These signals are internationally agreed upon. So the pilot always knows what the marshaller means.
What does a platform coordinator do?
The apron coordinator makes the planning for all tasks performed on the apron at Eindhoven Airport. He also works on the apron himself with tasks such as loading baggage in and out of the aircraft and pushback (pushing aircraft backwards with the pushback vehicle) so that the aircraft is in the correct position to cab to the runway. Bird controller what's that?
Airport and birds are not a good combination because birds can end up in the engines. If that happens, the plane must land and be completely examined for signs of damage. To chase away birds and to ensure flight safety we have bird controllers. They scare birds away with sound signals and/or with shots from signal guns. Sometimes birds are caught in cages and then released elsewhere; far away from the airport. You may have seen our bird controllers with their cars with the big speaker on the roof.
Customs employee
Customs employees check what goods travelers are taking with them at Eindhoven Airport. Because when you get on a plane and cross the border you are not allowed to put everything in your suitcase. For example, certain foods, (valuable) cultural goods and large sums of cash or cigarettes cannot be taken across the border just like that. Customs checks randomly travelers arriving at or departing from Eindhoven Airport. They also inform passengers about the rules that apply. Read here what you are allowed to bring with you when you cross the border from the Netherlands. And check also what you are allowed to bring from abroad to the Netherlands.
