Places to visit in Pisa

The heart of tourism in Pisa has to be the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). Construction began in 1137 and lasted 235 years. The foundation of this bell tower consists of a number of piles in the ground that, during construction, collapsed and caused a 10% slope. Although the Tower is the most famous, it was not the piazza's most important building at the time. The Tower served the medieval Duomo (cathedral), dedicated to Mary. Opposite the cathedral is Il Battistero, the largest baptistery in the world. The fourth and final wonder of architecture in the square is the Camposanto, a walled cemetery in Gothic style.

Discover Pisa

There is so much more to explore in Pisa. Other areas may perhaps be less touristy, but you will be astounded by the beauty. Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights' Square) is a landmark that displays Renaissance-style buildings, while the Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden) focuses on local flora. On the Via Zandoni, you can't miss the gigantic mural painted by American artist Keith Haring. Simple figures in bright colours call for peace and harmony in the world. Feeling hungry? Not surprising when you sit down on a sunny terrace after a long day of soaking up the culture. Pisa is a wonderful city to taste the real Italian cuisine, offering a wide range of antipasti, pastas and pizzas. Top your meal off with a Tuscan wine like Chianti, Montepulciano or Brunello di Montalcino.
