Eindhoven Airport starts terminal expansion by the end of this year

Share

Eindhoven Airport will start the expansion of the terminal including a baggage basement at the end of this year. The expansion is expected to be fully completed in 2027. The objective is for the construction to cause as little disruption as possible to passengers, visitors and employees.

The intention is that construction company Heijmans will build the expansion. It was designed by EGM architecten, Iv Bouw and Peutz. The terminal is being expanded because the current terminal has become too small for current passenger numbers. The current terminal was built for about 5 million passengers. In 2023, some 6.8 million passengers used the airport. This year, too, Eindhoven Airport expects passenger numbers at this level.

The final design for the expansion is ready. According to the plans, the current airside terminal (after the security check) will be enlarged by approximately 10,000 square meters. On the landside (before security check), the terminal will be expanded by 2,000 square meters. There will also be underground modifications for a baggage basement.

The expansion will create more space for gates and the non-Schengen area. There will also be more space for catering. The baggage basement will allow for faster and more efficient handling of arriving baggage, and the larger arrivals hall above it will allow more flights to disembark simultaneously. This is a major need since no scheduled flights are operated after 11 p.m. The expansion thus provides more comfort for travelers and employees because there is more space for handling processes and services.

Sustainability

The expansion incorporates the latest developments in sustainability. For example, materials will be reused, such as the facade parts from the existing terminal. After the expansion, the terminal will be completely gas-free. Two thermal storage systems will be used to heat and cool the terminal. One of these will be installed in the expansion of the terminal. Almost 1,100 solar panels will be installed on the roof of the terminal extension. These will soon generate about 363,500 kilowatt hours of energy annually, which is about 40% of the energy consumed in the new part of the terminal. Part of the roof will be planted with sedum. This contributes to water collection and insulation of the terminal. In the basement there will be a water basin where rainwater will be collected. That water will be used for toilets in the expansion. The design with its distinctive entrance will be shaped so that materials can be easily reused in the future. Almost all of the equipment used during construction will be electric.

Planning

The total realization of the expansion takes approximately 2.5 years. Due to the addition of the basement and the phasing of the construction (the airport remains operational) more time is needed than previously estimated. The planning of the work is aligned with the anticipated temporary closure due to runway work in 2027. The expansion of the terminal fits Eindhoven Airport's ambition to further increase the quality of the airport.
