Eindhoven Airport to be closed for five and a half months in 2027: these are the consequences
In and around Eindhoven Airport, operations will come to a standstill for more than five months in 2027 due to major works on the runway. All air traffic will be suspended between February and 19 July. During this period, intensive work will be carried out to future‑proof the airport. Passengers will be able to use alternative airports during the closure.
The military airfield at Eindhoven Air Base, which is used by Eindhoven Airport, has only one runway. As a result, flights and passengers will have to divert to other airports for approximately five and a half months.
Frédérique Portheine, Airport Operations Manager at Eindhoven Airport, explains: “It will be an impactful period for everyone involved with the airport. There will temporarily be no aircraft or passengers, but the airport will be extremely busy due to the works.”
The plans include major maintenance of the runway, widening of the runway shoulders, and measures to address water nuisance. An aircraft arresting system will be installed for military fighter jets. Civil aviation at Eindhoven Airport will also benefit from the upgrades. Portheine adds: “The airport will gain an additional taxiway so that aircraft will need to cross the runway less often. This is more efficient and safer.”In addition, the Instrument Landing System (ILS), a landing aid, will be expanded. “Among other things, lighting will be installed in the runway, enabling aircraft to land even in dense fog.” This fulfils a long‑standing ambition of Eindhoven Airport.
What does this mean for you?
Due to the temporary closure, airlines will temporarily move their operations to other airports and adjust their flight schedules. As a result, passengers from the region will be able to travel via alternative airports during this period, allowing their journeys to continue. For local residents, the temporary closure has a different impact. With no air traffic arriving at or departing from Eindhoven, it will be noticeably quieter in the area around the airport. Many residents will recognize this situation from the COVID period, when air traffic was significantly reduced due to various travel restrictions. The works also have consequences for employees at the airport. Some staff members will temporarily carry out different work. Others will work temporarily at another location or for another employer. Safeguarding employment is an important focus for Eindhoven Airport and its partner companies during this period.
More space, comfort and facilities
The period without air traffic will also be used to complete the final works on the expansion of Eindhoven Airport’s terminal. From 19 July, Eindhoven Airport will once again warmly welcome passengers, with a future‑proof runway and an expanded terminal offering more space, comfort and facilities.
