You're sure to meet some old acquaintances on your trip to Debrecen. Debrecen may be many kilometres away, but it is easy to reach. The airport is only 5 kilometres south of the city. The atmosphere is relaxed, which could be because mass tourism hasn't found its way here yet. It is an original destination that will capture your heart.

Places to visit in Debrecen

In the Reformed Theological University we encounter the portrait of John Calvin. A little further on, we meet another Dutchman: Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. He is remembered for freeing 26 reformed ministers from the Neapolitan galleys (1676). A memorial has been erected as a tribute to this heroic act. At the foot of the monument is a cast of the wreath that Pope John Paul II laid down, a gesture of apology for the persecution of protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries. Hortobágy National Park (Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park) is one of the ten national parks of Hungary. It is located about 25 kilometres from Debrecen, in the town of Hortobágy. Hortobágy is part of the Hungarian steppe, also known as the Puszta, an area consisting mainly of semi-arid grassland.

Discover Debrecen

Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary after Budapest. It is home to more than 200,000 people, the majority of whom work in the textile, pharmaceutical and food industries. Old crafts (pottery, shoes) are still very much alive here. It is typical of a city that is developing, yet has managed to retain a homely and open, small-town atmosphere. The centre of Debrecen is easy to navigate. You more or less automatically walk from the station along the main street to the Nagytemplom, the Great Church. An aptly chosen name since this house of worship in classicist style can accommodate as many as 3,000 churchgoers. Debrecen is the home of the Hungarian Reformed Church and is often named the ‘Rome of Calvinism’. Not surprisingly, you will also find the Reformed Theological University here.
