Athens is the centre of all centres in the world. It is the city of the Olympic Games, classical antiquity, a cultural hub and home to countless museums with unique finds. Classical antiquity and a modern metropolis - with its historical monuments in the backdrop - come together to form New Athens.

Places to visit in Athens

Athens boasts an incredibly long and rich heritage and offers a wealth of ancient ruins, buildings and museums. Acropolis is the pinnacle - literally - of the Greek era and means fortified hill, castle. Climb the steps of the Acropolis and enjoy a truly magnificent view over the city of Athens. The Acropolis is the largest temple complex in Greece and consists of several buildings including the Parthenon, Erechtheoin, Athena Nike and Propylaea. But there's more to the city than the Acropolis. At the National Archaeological Museum, for instance, you'll find a more than two-metre high statue of Poseidon, a statue of Zeus, the head of goddess Hygieia and the ancient mask of Agamemnon.

Discover Athens

If you're a tourist and want to enjoy a picturesque area with delicious food, head to Athens' Plaka district. Stroll through the narrow streets and alleys, admire the brightly coloured homes and enjoy the local delicacies and drinks at the many outdoor cafés. Don't forget to bring a map though, as you could otherwise get lost in the maze of narrow streets and alleyways. If you really want to immerse yourself in Athenian life, go to the flea market in Monastiraki or visit the fish market. Prefer exclusive and modern shopping? Then visit Emporiko Centro, an exclusive passage, or the Emrou shopping street.
