Flying to Corfu

The summer residence of Empress Sisi

Mediterranean climate

23 degrees

2 hours and 45 minutes

Some places have been popular tourist destinations for centuries and will never change. Corfu is such a place. The Austrian Empress Sisi set the trend way back in 1861 when she visited the island and instantly fell in love, subsequently having a holiday home built there. Not a bad idea, with the clear blue sea, peaceful bays and a hilly interior where olive trees, cypresses and orchids colour the horizon.

Places to visit in Corfu

At 900 metres high, Pantokrator is the highest mountain in Corfu and is located in the north-east of the island. Built on top of the mountain is a 14th-century monastery, which you can visit by passing through several hillside villages. On a clear day you can see as far as Albania. To learn more about Corfu's long history, it's worth paying a visit to the Archaeological Museum. You'll find it in the town of Ermeni Vraila where you can gain insight into the history of Corfu from various objects that have been excavated over the centuries.

Discover Corfu

The summer residence of Empress Sisi – the Achilleion – fulfils all the romantic expectations. It's a classical Italian-style palace where you can immerse yourself in a dreamlike world, gazing at the many statues, ceiling paintings and murals. From the Achilleion, it's only a short distance to Kerkyra, better known as Corfu Town. This Greek stronghold was built as a fortress during the Venetian rule and acted as a catalyst for both art and architecture. It took years to construct the heavy city walls, two forts and Corfu's stately Liston promenade with its characteristic colonnade. The narrow streets of Kerkyra are host to a multitude of shops, coffee bars and lively cafés.
