Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and has a population of around 550,000 people. Copenhagen's most famous inhabitants have blue blood, for as early as the 15th century the city became the residence of the world's oldest monarchy. This has given the city numerous beautiful palaces, such as Amalienborg Palace.

Places to visit in Copenhagen

The Little Mermaid may not be big, but it is the biggest attraction in Copenhagen. It is a piece of history that is still hip and happening, just like Copenhagen itself. Perhaps the best place to learn about Denmark's cultural history is the Nationalmuseet. This is the National Museum of Copenhagen and is located close to Strøget. For a panoramic view of the city of Copenhagen, a visit to the Rundetårn (Round Tower) is the place to go. From the top, your eyes quickly fall on the Strøget, Copenhagen's and Europe's longest shopping street. A tremendous choice of trendy shops extend out from City Hall Square. It's not only a paradise for shoppers, those seeking entertainment will love the many street artists that perform along the way.

Discover Copenhagen

Pretty much everything is within walking distance in Copenhagen, so finding a nice restaurant is never hard. The Nyhavn is a great place for a bite to eat. Stately, colourful merchant houses along the waterfront remind you of Copenhagen's trading past; some homes are even more than 300 years old. Famous people have resided here, for instance the master of fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen. Today it is more about enjoying life, with cafés and restaurants aplenty. You can sample the local dishes such as Gravad laks (smoked salmon), Smørrebrød (rye bread) and Denmark's most famous blondes: Tuborg and Carlsberg.
